MustRing alternatives: what does the system already do?
Before building anything here, the honest comparison is against Apple's own tools — because the system already covers parts of this problem. Here is the capability table MustRing's design starts from.
The system's own capabilities
| Capability | Apple Clock | Apple Health · Medications | Apple Reminders Urgent (≈ iOS 26.2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penetrates silent / Focus | Yes — system alarm | Yes — via Critical Alerts, opt-in per medication | Yes — real alarm, but must be flagged Urgent manually |
| Medication list / dose log | No | Yes — Taken / Skipped, follow-up reminders | No |
| Arbitrary task text | Limited (labels) | Medications only | Any reminder |
| Every entry is an alarm by default | Yes — clock-app mental model | No | No — per-item Urgent |
| Miss audit trail | Weak | Log lives in Health | Weak |
| Escalation to a second contact | No | No | No |
Table from MustRing's requirements document (2026-09-14), which states the conclusion plainly: the system already covers medication Critical Alerts and single Urgent reminders — a third-party app that is "just an AlarmKit shell" wins nothing.
Where MustRing aims
- Every alarm is a real alarm. No per-item flags, no opt-in archaeology — the app's whole premise is that these specific moments must get through.
- The log is the product. Take it, or skip it and say why — an audit trail for the moments that matter, including annual dates (Gregorian or lunar) that Clock and Health don't track.
- Narrow on purpose. Medication, pickups, important dates, and the few ADHD critical tasks that deserve an alarm — not morning waking, not habit gamification.
When the built-ins are enough
- Medication only: Apple Health's medication log with Critical Alerts is genuinely good. If that's your whole need, use it.
- Occasional must-get-through reminder: flag one Reminder as Urgent. The friction of the flag is the system telling you it's an exception, not a default.
- Morning waking: that's the Clock app's job, and MustRing deliberately doesn't compete there.
